And don't get me started on Bang Bang Machine. When Simon Mayo 'celebrated' Peel's birthday with a golden year (or whatever it's called) of former F50 favourites, he naturally went for the more familiar stuff, which had got in the charts. So we got stuff like Prince, which actually sullied the F50 a few years back. I mean I've always voted anyway just based on 15 or so shows a year I used to hear on hand-me-down cassettes. And usually I'd include at least one soukous track but no African stuff has ever made his final tally as I recall. I wonder how many votes the Melt Banana session will get - it was at the top of my list but as Peel never read out any of the 20 or so tracks' titles I just had to vote for the whole session. I also voted, like you care, for Klute's "Leo 9" from "Hidden Rooms Compilation" and Dawn Of The Replicants' "Science Fiction Geek." It may not have occurred to many of you but listening to Peel pre-internet on cassette introduces a different dynamic to the experience. Rather than having the fine music evaporate in the ether, it instead is preserved like a newspaper, a snapshot of the new music of that particular week. I may have 100 ninety minute Peel shows by now, maybe 200, I dont know. Its a lot. Going back decades. I'll certainly hold on to them. Knowledge of Peel for me goes way back to the eighties when he used to have an half hour on Dutch national radio around 84/85 (in English!) courtesy of the small but progressive broadcasting union VPRO. It was a highlight of the week for that small group of fanatical Dutch music lovers and it sure got me hooked on music I would have ordinarily hadn't heard (or taped with the trusty pause button at hand) that easy otherwise . He also used to have a monthly after midnight program for awhile which just consisted a two hour show each month of artists by a particular letter of the alphabet, he just started at A and made it to H if my memories serve me correct. This was excellent as I always love the mix of styles of his programs a lot and this gave him the opportunity to play practically anything. As reception of Radio One is atrocious across the North Sea so try to catch the World Service (and Internet) show if I can. Anyway if anyone's making compilation tapes of shows regularly and would like to swap drop me a line please. Arjan From dodgefromgrange@... Sat Dec 11 23:34:52 1999 From: dodgefromgrange@... I only caught two tracks, one of which was an excellent re-working of Warmer, very 60s with jazz flute as mentioned by Nunununa. Live on stage I find they're a bit shouty and guitarry, the keyboards tend to get a bit lost which is a shame. I don't really miss the strings though and they play trumpet too, so it's just a slightly rowdier approach to the album sound. Andy From smchugh@... Fri Dec 17 18:55:32 1999 From: smchugh@...
