Hi, all!
Just got back from London (1 hour 45 from Tottenham Court Road to Tescos in
Bristol, not bad!)(Brilliant to get the week's shopping done at 1am!)
As you will have heard, PJ was brilliant! no new stuff, but great to see her
back to her Strat &Marshall Stack! Those early songs made me long for the
days of her 3-piece Punk Rock band.
The PJ&JP broadcast seemed to be unedited, though the whole show went out
about 90 minutes after the recording, so it wasn't actually live, as Peel
seemed to suggest during the broadcast, though maybe his entire show was
recorded 90 minutes early.
The Bunnymen broadcast definitely was edited, as Mac spent half the night
moaning about feedback from his vocal mic. It was almost like the monitor guy
was doing it on purpose just to wind him up. (Surely not!)
Cheers!

0100,0100,0100I've just started work on a forthcoming new music programme on
our College radio station. Because of this I have access to Mini-
disc technology. Anyone out their interested in a mini-disc swap so
we can play what you send us? It will be Post Rock, indie, avant
garde and some electronica, or anything in general thats good. I
have a webpage with a list of my record collection I made in a failed
attempt to get a copy of a rare Beefheart LP. We will be given a
test run and if it is seen that we are doing something new and
different then we will go full time. This is where I see you coming in
to help.
Also if you are involved in a band or label we would love if you
posted us promos/demos etc. We can play CD, vinyl, mini-disc
but tapes only if they are good quality. I'll give the station address
and webpage URL to anyone who requests it.
I would like to go into negotiations for a world exclusive dbut radio
play of the list band.

After last weeks monumental Novak session I bought the Blue
Cinook single which is equally wonderful. I seem to remember
hearing a track from them a few years ago which wasn't as
wonderful and which meant I ignored them up till now. Have they
improved recently or have they always been so wonderful. What
other releases by them should I consider investing in?
Also I heard a bit of a track recently by a band called Pram, also I
believe from Birmingham. It seemed pretty good. The band name
sounds familiar but it may be that I have them mixed up with Tram.
Can anyone (Mr. Strong?) tell me anything about them?

They are different now (more confident?) but I still reckon their first 3
singles are pretty great. Album out next Monday.

pram have been going for ages (a number of albums on Too Pure, and singles
etc on various labels) - they are seen as the elder statesmen of the Brum
scene, even though most of the other (better) Birmingham bands are of
similar age. There's no danger of getting them mixed up with Tram, Pram
sound pretty cooky - somewhat unusual instruments, crap singing etc.

I was never too impressed by seeing Pram live or the few
recordings I'd heard by them but I think their new ep is
great, in particular the "Space Siren" track which is
rather wonderful IMO. It doesn't have any vocals - maybe
that's why it is so good?

Hmm, could be , I always seem to remember that they were tied in with Long
Fin Killie - same label, tours together, unusual instruments as noted
earlier, etc. I got hold of Sarogossa Sea, said to be their best work, but
don't think I listened to it more than once, it was just uninspiring.

It was about the North East. Darlington, Sunderland, Smogsville
and some other quaint seaside town with some old folkies and their
daughter with pink hair. There was a band called Bleed from
Sunderland on, a bloke from Smogsville who does a drum
workshop and a band from Darlington who have been round for
donkeys years and never released anything.
I taped it so, if your desperate for a copy, I can do one for you.

Also some brilliant stuff from Comatose who were in session recently as
a result of Peel's visit - that's the girl who had no idea what a "Peel
Session" means... bless her. The programme petered out rather, as Peel
himself said, with some singing by the Watersons in something of an Andy

Pram session last night was actualy not bad at all, Peel said something
about them searching for an identity which they now seem to have found,
which summed them up pretty well - also, what they're doing now seems to be
quite in vogue at the moment, slightly trip-hoppy sounds, female vocals
sounding better than they did previously. Still a hint of Long Fin Killie
and the TooPure sound - odd instruments in use for example - but with the
female vocals in particular, more like a cross between LFK and BOWS.
Was listening to a tape of the F50 (just getting round to duping it now!)
and wondered if Clinic's 'Monkey on your Back' was supposed to be a tribute
to Sparks, with it's "Get in the swing" refrain at the start?

Yes it came out on Monday I believe and excellent it is too. But we
already knew that, I suppose, so that was a silly thing to say. It's on
the Domino label which came as a bit of a surprise to me, I don't know
if this means their LP is going to be on Domino too.

I can see how it might appear petty but I failed to mention I'm not in the UK but in Atlanta Georgia. So I certainly don't need the tape to impress my friends, as no one here would have a clue who John Peel is.
I've listened to his shortwave show for close to 2 decades now, and over the years I've dropped him an appreciative note from time to time, and was always surprised when he took the time to write back. A few years ago while visiting England Peel contacted me and, again to my surprise, invited me and my wife out to Peel Acres for dinner.
Let's just say his house gives new meaning to the term "record collection."
Anyway, back to my petty life......

Glad you didn't take it personally, because Stig was being tongue-in-cheek
I reckon - non-UK residents wouldn't realise that Stig is the Mark E. Smith
of the Peel mail-list, as he gets dedications and mentions on a regular
basis.

That's ok Tom, I wasn't having a poke at you. Well, only an affectionate
poke. Our Peel mentions you on a regular basis and we got regular
reports on your trip to China (...assuming that was you...). I have been
known to bombard Peel with faxes in the vain and small minded attempt to
get mentions on national radio myself, and from the thence the humour
arose. Oh how we laughed.

Hallo Stig & Stuart,
The Domino people told us that they would indeed be releasing the Clinic album. Have you got the mini (8 track) set on Domino, "IPC Sub-Editors..."? It's well ace.
Cheers,

Yes it came out on Monday I believe and excellent it is too. But we
already knew that, I suppose, so that was a silly thing to say. It's on
the Domino label which came as a bit of a surprise to me, I don't know
if this means their LP is going to be on Domino too.

The Beefheart Dot Com webpage has recently posted a RealAudio clip of a Beefheart interview with Peel conducted in 1973 (!)
Really worth checking out. Runs about 15 minutes. Don is relaxed and down-to-earth, and John sounds like he is about 17 and very mellooow, man.

Ha, I feel that Peel should be given the chance to hear this! I was
planning on forwarding him the following info anyway so I might tag that on
at the end (if he can get through the 7000 emails he mentioned last night).
This is some more Beefheart info, based at the same

Sorry for sending this via the list but every time i try to send this to
Tom off list it gets bounced as undeliverable but i see that tom just
posted something today on Beefheart ,so if Tom wants to contact me
directly ....
Tom
i've tried to send you an e-mail a few times during this week to ask you
if anyone replied to your request for a tape copy of the Peel show when
Simon Mayo was on.
if not i have a copy as i live in Hong Kong and my brother sends me
tapes of his shows (although not always and of course it only runs for
90 mins.). i checked the tape and it includes his dedication to you so
if you want it pls let me have your address and i'll send it off to you.
